Mo Constantine changed modern bathing with an idea created in a Dorset garden shed. As inventor of the bath bomb and co-inventor of the solid shampoo bar, she turned package-free cosmetics into a worldwide movement. She is also a Lush co-founder, manufacturing director, company owner, mother and conservation trustee. Her quiet manner contrasts with work that reshaped beauty retail while reducing plastic packaging.

    Who Is Mo Constantine?

Mo Constantine OBE is a British inventor and businesswoman whose legal name is Margaret Joan Constantine. Born in Warwick in June 1953, she turned 73 in June 2026. Her exact birth date remains private. After her O-levels, she completed secretarial training before moving into cosmetics and manufacturing. Lush identifies her as a co-founder, product inventor and manufacturing director. She remains an active company director.

    Mo Constantine’s Husband and Family

Mo Constantine met Mark Constantine at an all-night party when they were teenagers. They married in 1973 and have shared more than five decades of family life and business. Mark became Lush’s chief executive, while Mo focused on laboratories and manufacturing.

They have three children: Simon, Jack and Claire. Simon has worked as a perfumer and ethical buyer. Jack is a product inventor and Chief Digital Officer. Claire is Group Retail Director and creates fragrances and skincare. By 2022, Mark and Mo had 11 grandchildren.

    A Family Built Into Lush

Their children grew up near prototypes and factory experiments. Jack learnt bath bomb production from his mother before helping create multilayered designs. Mo views loyal, long-serving colleagues as part of the Lush family. Its collaborative culture connects inventors, factories and shops so customer feedback reaches developers quickly.

Career Before the Creation of Lush

Mark Constantine and beauty therapist Liz Weir, later Liz Bennett, developed the Dorset cosmetics company Constantine and Weir. Mo joined its creative and manufacturing work. The team became a major Body Shop supplier and created many successful formulas.

The Body Shop purchased their manufacturing rights in the early 1990s. Accounts value the agreement at either £6 million or £9 million. The team then invested in Cosmetics To Go, a mail-order company known for bright catalogues and unusual products.

Failure That Led to a Fresh Beginning

Cosmetics To Go gained strong demand but expanded too quickly. Flooding, fulfilment failures and weak cost control caused its 1994 collapse. The founders used their skills, formulas and determination to begin again.

The first Lush shop opened in Poole in 1995. Its six founders were Mo Constantine, Mark Constantine, Rowena Bird, Helen Ambrosen, Liz Bennett and Paul Greeves. Customers chose the name through a competition.

How Mo Constantine Invented the Bath Bomb

In spring 1989, Mo Constantine worked in her Dorset garden shed on a bath product that could carry essential oils into water without irritating sensitive skin or leaving grease. Effervescent Alka-Seltzer tablets provided inspiration. She combined sodium bicarbonate, citric acid and essential oils, then pressed the mixture into shape. These first Aqua Sizzlers contained calming French lavender.

From Simple Fizzer to Bath-Time Art

Mo and Mark visited local shops for jelly moulds and useful shapes. They added colours, salts, petals, fragrances, olive oil and cocoa butter. Avobath and Butterball grew from these experiments, with Butterball becoming a long-running design.

The founders’ earlier business secured bath bomb protection in 1990. World Bath Bomb Day honours this milestone on 27 April. At Lush, Mo removed unnecessary wrapping and made each product attractive enough to sell naked. Glitter, coloured salts and layers turned bath bombs into visual theatre.

Mo Constantine and the Solid Shampoo Bar

Before the bath bomb, Mo and chemist Stanislaw Krysztal developed solid shampoo. Their patent, naming both as inventors, has a British priority date of 23 February 1988.

Their method compressed detergent needles with water, conditioners and fragrance. The bar delivered many washes and needed no plastic bottle. Lush histories use 1987 for its invention and 1988 for its patent milestone; the legal record supports a 1988 priority date.

    Soap, Palm Oil and Packaging

Mo also created a pourable soap base with Krysztal. Her later palm-oil-free formula used sunflower, rapeseed and coconut oils, cutting Lush’s annual palm oil use by roughly 250,000 kilograms. She encouraged other manufacturers to adopt it.

Her solid, unpackaged cosmetics became central to Lush. Shampoo bars, soaps and bath bombs required far less plastic than liquid alternatives, joining performance with environmental responsibility.

    The Global Rise of Lush

Lush grew from one Poole shop into an international company. For the year ending June 2025, group turnover reached £736.2 million, up 9.4 per cent. Retail grew by 7 per cent and digital sales by 13 per cent.

The business had 869 permanent shops in 53 countries and more than 13,000 employees. These are company results, not Mo’s income. She works behind the scenes while Mark acts as its main voice.

Mo Constantine’s Net Worth and Companies

Lush remains private. Employees own 10 per cent, while Mark and Mo Constantine retain the family interest. A 2025 estimate valued their joint fortune at £249 million and company ownership at 56.2 per cent. It is not Mo’s individual wealth.

Companies House shows 11 appointments. Her seven active directorships cover Lush Ltd, Lush Manufacturing, Lush Cosmetics, Cosmetic Warriors, Cosmetics To Go, B Never Too Busy to Be Beautiful and Investment 1234. She has been a Lush Ltd director since June 1994. Poole correspondence addresses are not her private home.

    Conservation, Politics and Social Values

Mark and Mo helped found Birds of Poole Harbour, supporting education, wildlife surveys, habitat care and returning ospreys. She became a trustee in March 2023, and the couple have funded conservation projects. Electoral records confirm her Green Party donations, including £9,250 in 2017 and £2,500 in 2019. Her values also shape Lush’s opposition to animal testing, reduced packaging and grass-roots giving.

    Honours and Corporate Criticism

Mo Constantine and Mark Constantine received OBEs for services to beauty in 2011. Queen Elizabeth II presented the honours at Windsor Castle that May. One dispute concerned £5 million in total bonuses paid to eight senior figures in 2022, including Mark and Mo, after Lush accepted £5.1 million in state support. Her share was not disclosed. Lush linked the payments to acquiring its North American operation. Wider criticism of employment conditions and campaigns does not prove personal wrongdoing by Mo.

    Where Is Mo Constantine Now?

Even in her seventies, she remains closely linked to product making rather than celebrity promotion. Her approach favours practical testing, shared credit and careful manufacturing, qualities that have kept her influence strong despite her limited media presence.

Mo remains connected with Lush as a co-founder, inventor, manufacturing director and active board member. Her work is centred in Poole and the Greater Bournemouth area. She maintains a modest online presence through Instagram and LinkedIn, preferring laboratories, products and family life to constant media attention.

Her exact salary, individual fortune, height, religion and private address have not been disclosed. What is clear is her lasting influence. Mo Constantine turned simple ingredients into products recognised across the world. Through invention, teamwork and environmental purpose, she helped build Lush while changing how millions of people wash their hair, enjoy a bath and think about cosmetic packaging.
