Mark Constantine: The Visionary Founder Who Turned Lush into a Global Ethical Beauty Powerhouse

Mark Constantine built one of Britain’s most distinctive beauty businesses through hardship, failure and bold invention. As co-founder and chief executive of Lush, he moved fresh cosmetics, cruelty-free values and package-free products into the mainstream. He faced family loss, homelessness and business collapse before opening the first Lush shop in Poole. His work now reaches more than 50 countries, while birdsong, conservation, charity and family ownership enrich his story.

    Who Is Mark Constantine?

Mark Constantine OBE is a British entrepreneur, trichologist, perfumer and product inventor. He was born on 21 July 1952 in Sutton, Surrey, which is now part of Greater London. He grew up mainly in Weymouth, Dorset, and was 74 years old in August 2026.

He is one of the six founders of Lush, launched in 1995. He remains chief executive and influences product creation, ethical policy and strategy. He calls himself a “hippy soapmaker”, capturing his informal style and belief that a company should serve more than profit.

Mark Constantine’s Early Life and Education

Mark Constantine’s father, John, left when Mark was two. His mother remarried, but home life became unhappy. At 16, conflict with his mother and stepfather left him homeless. He lived in a tent and woodland while working until his friend Jeff Osment’s parents gave him a safe home.

School Struggles and a Practical Career

Mark Constantine attended Weymouth Grammar School, failed his examinations and did not enter university. He began a hairdressing apprenticeship and became interested in hair and scalp health. He later worked in London with Elizabeth Arden and the Ginger Group before training and practising as a trichologist.

    Reuniting With His Father

Osment later helped him trace John. Father and son reunited in South Africa in 2012 after 58 years apart. The meeting inspired Constantine’s Dear John fragrance. Osment also wrote Dear John, a biography covering his friend’s life and Lush. An expanded edition arrived in 2026.

Mark Constantine’s Wife, Children and Family Life

Mark Constantine wife is Margaret Joan Constantine OBE, born in Warwick in 1953. The couple met as teenagers at an all-night party and married in 1973. Their marriage has lasted for more than five decades, and their creative partnership has been central to Lush.

They have three children: Simon, Jack and Claire. Simon has worked as a perfumer and ethical buyer. Jack has led digital work and contributed to invention. Claire became Group Retail Director and helped create fragrances. By 2022, Mark and Mo had 11 grandchildren. The family supports their wish to preserve Lush for future generations.

    Mo Constantine’s Creative Role

Mo Constantine is a founder and inventor in her own right. She created the bath bomb in 1989 and developed the solid shampoo bar with scientist Stan Krysztal. Credit given to Mark for both inventions overlooks her work. His own creations include the 1995 Karma fragrance and ideas for hair care, skincare and perfume.

From Hair Clinic to The Body Shop

Back in Dorset, Constantine became resident trichologist at a Poole salon and met beauty therapist Liz Weir, later Liz Bennett. In 1977, they opened the Herbal Hair and Beauty Clinic at 29 High Street, producing treatments from natural ingredients.

Constantine sent samples to The Body Shop founder Anita Roddick. An initial order worth roughly £1,573 became a major partnership. His team supplied products and created formulas for many years. The Body Shop bought the formula rights in 1991. One later account valued the deal at £9 million; older accounts used £6 million.

The Collapse of Cosmetics To Go

The team launched mail-order company Cosmetics To Go in 1988. Colourful catalogues and inventive products brought fast growth, but expansion came too quickly. Flooding, fulfilment failures and poor cost control added pressure. The company collapsed in 1994, leaving Constantine close to bankruptcy with £43,000. He used the money and hard lessons to begin again.

    How Mark Constantine Created Lush

The first Lush shop opened at 29 High Street, Poole, in April 1995. The six founders were Mark Constantine, Mo Constantine, Rowena Bird, Helen Ambrosen, Liz Bennett and Paul Greeves. Customers helped choose the name through a competition.

Lush offered effective products with fresh ingredients, limited preservatives and good value without costly packaging. Goods were displayed like food, while staff cut soap from large blocks. Clear labels and the maker’s face on pots strengthened its personal style.

    Products, Packaging and Animal Welfare

Solid shampoo, bath bombs, massage bars and other “naked” goods reduced plastic use. Lush refuses to test finished products on animals and backs alternatives to animal experiments. Since 2012, its £250,000 Lush Prize has funded scientists, campaigners and educators pursuing that goal.

Lush Today: Ownership, Shops and Financial Strength

Lush remains private. Mark and Mo retain control, while employees hold 10 per cent through an ownership trust designed to protect its values. For the year ending June 2025, turnover reached £736.2 million, up 9.4 per cent. Like-for-like sales rose 8 per cent, retail grew 7 per cent and digital sales increased 13 per cent. Lush had 869 permanent shops in 53 countries, 19 spas and more than 13,000 employees.

Constantine still works from the Poole base and has no plan to retire. His presence keeps invention and activism at the business’s heart.

Mark Constantine’s Net Worth and Companies

No audited figure exists for his personal fortune. Estimates for Mark and Mo together ranged from £227 million to £249 million in 2025. The higher sum covers their combined wealth, not Mark’s alone. Their main asset is control of Lush.

Companies House records show 13 current and former appointments. Seven active directorships cover Lush Ltd, Lush Retail, Lush Cosmetics, Cosmetic Warriors, B Never Too Busy to Be Beautiful, Cosmetics To Go and Investment 1234. Today’s Cosmetics To Go is not the failed 1988 venture. Business addresses are not his private home.

    Charity, Conservation and Political Views

Mark Constantine launched Charity Pot in 2007. Before it ended in September 2024, the product raised roughly £75 million through 17,000 grants. Lush’s giving since 2007 later passed £100 million through more than 19,000 donations.

He has donated to the Green Party and opposed tax avoidance and environmental damage. His campaigning attracts praise and criticism. The 2018 #SpyCops campaign upset police groups and pressured staff. Lush left major social platforms in 2021 over youth safety and body image, costing an estimated £9 million yearly in lost sales.

In September 2025, Lush closed its UK shops, factories and website for one day over starvation and civilian suffering in Gaza. Constantine placed the cost near £300,000. His firm words divided opinion, while supporters praised the financial sacrifice.

    Birdsong and Poole Harbour

Birdwatching shapes his private life. In 2000, he formed The Sound Approach with Magnus Robb and Arnoud van den Berg. Its bird-call archive holds tens of thousands of recordings. Mark and Mo co-founded Birds of Poole Harbour, supporting education, surveys and the return of ospreys to southern England.

His books include The Sound Approach to Birding, Catching the Bug and The Poetry Business School. He curated In the Bath. Synaesthesia connects music and sound with scent, joining his passions for birds, perfume and music.

    Working Style and Personal Values

Mark Constantine keeps a daily rhythm. He is known for taking a bath at 4 p.m., using the time to test products and think without interruption. He prefers involvement in formulas, shop design and campaigns instead of acting as a distant executive. Independence matters deeply to him because outside shareholders could demand profit at the expense of staff, ingredients or ethics. He also supports fair taxation and rejects schemes created merely to reduce a company’s contribution. Although wealthy, he presents himself as an inventor rather than a corporate celebrity. His mix of stubbornness, curiosity and moral certainty has shaped both Lush’s decisions and its sharpest disputes.

Honours and the Legacy of Mark Constantine

Mark Constantine and Mo Constantine received OBEs in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to beauty. The Sound Approach later won an award for innovative ornithology, reflecting a career joining commerce, creativity and conservation. His record is not flawless. Lush has faced disputes over pay, working conditions, unions and political campaigns. Yet his influence on cosmetics is clear. From a homeless teenager to an international chief executive, his life shows resilience and courage after failure. His lasting achievement is the belief that business can remain inventive, independent and guided by conscience.
