    Bryony Gordon

Bryony Gordon is an English journalist, author, broadcaster, podcaster and mental-health campaigner known for candid writing. She has written about relationships, motherhood, body image, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, addiction, recovery and self-worth. Her work blends humour with direct personal experience, making difficult subjects accessible.

Her full name is Bryony Naomi Gordon. She was born in July 1980 in England, with 5 July 1980 widely given as her birth date. Companies House confirms July 1980 as her month and year of birth, her British nationality and England as her country of residence.

Bryony Gordon’s Early Life and Education

Bryony Gordon grew up in west London. Her mother, Jane Gordon, is a journalist, so newspapers and writing formed part of her early life. She attended Kew College and later Queen’s Gate School in South Kensington. She studied History of Art at University College London but left after a short period and moved into journalism.

    Bryony Gordon’s Journalism Career

Her early experience included work at the Daily Express and Sunday Express. In 2001, she joined the Daily Mirror’s 3AM Girls, a showbusiness column. She later returned to The Telegraph and spent more than two decades there. Her work developed from celebrity and lifestyle writing into columns and interviews about family, mental health, addiction and the pressures faced by women. In 2024, she moved to the Daily Mail as a columnist, continuing her focus on wellbeing, family, recovery and everyday life.

    Bryony Gordon and Mental Health

Mental health is central to her career. Gordon has spoken openly about obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, bulimia, alopecia, addiction and binge-eating disorder. Instead of hiding these experiences, she made them part of her books, journalism and public campaigning. Her openness helped bring OCD and other mental-health conditions into mainstream conversation. A key message in her work is that illness can exist even when a person’s life looks successful from the outside.

    Founding Mental Health Mates

In 2016, she founded Mental Health Mates, a peer-support community where people experiencing mental-health difficulties can meet, walk and talk without judgement. The first walk took place in Hyde Park, London, on Valentine’s Day 2016. The idea later grew into a wider support network. The group does not replace professional care; its purpose is to reduce isolation and create a safe social space. Mental Health Mates C.I.C. was incorporated in January 2019. Gordon became a director on 9 January 2019 and remains an active director.

    Bryony Gordon’s Books

Gordon has built a strong career as an author. The Wrong Knickers: A Decade of Chaos, published in 2014, looks back at her twenties, relationships and difficult choices. Mad Girl followed in 2016 and focused on OCD, depression and mental illness. It became a Sunday Times number one bestseller.

Eat, Drink, Run arrived in 2018 and explored fitness, running and emotional wellbeing. You Got This was published in 2019 for teenage girls, covering confidence, body image and self-belief. Glorious Rock Bottom, released in 2020, tells the story of her alcohol and drug problems, treatment and recovery. No Such Thing as Normal followed in 2021 and explores anxiety, therapy, addiction, sleep, boundaries and mental wellbeing.

    Bryony Gordon’s Move Into Fiction

Let Down Your Hair, published in 2022, was her young adult fiction debut. It reworks Rapunzel for the social-media age and explores identity, appearance and pressure. Mad Woman followed in 2024, returning to themes of mental health, motherhood, sobriety, hormones, body image and binge eating. In April 2026, she published People Pleaser, her adult fiction debut. The novel follows Olivia Greenwood, a woman who has spent years trying to keep everyone happy before suddenly changing how she responds to others.

    Bryony Gordon’s Podcast Career

In 2017, Gordon launched Bryony Gordon’s Mad World, a podcast built on honest conversations about mental health. Its best-known early episode featured Prince Harry, who spoke about grief after the death of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and about seeking help for his mental wellbeing. The interview helped move mental-health discussion further into mainstream British media. Bryony Gordon later launched The Life of Bryony, which covers anxiety, relationships, addiction, bereavement, parenting and other difficult parts of life through personal conversations with guests.

    Bryony Gordon’s Husband and Family

Bryony Gordon is married to Harry Wilson, a financial journalist. They married in 2013 and have one daughter. Current publisher biographies state that she lives in south London with her husband and daughter. She has often written about motherhood, especially when discussing mental health, alcohol dependence and recovery, while keeping her daughter largely outside public life.

    Sobriety, Addiction and Recovery

One of the most important parts of Gordon’s life story is recovery from alcohol dependence. She has publicly identified herself as a recovering alcoholic and has written about drinking, drugs, rehab and twelve-step recovery. Her sobriety date is 27 August 2017. In August 2026, she marked nine years without alcohol and used the anniversary to encourage people struggling with addiction. Glorious Rock Bottom gives the fullest account of this period and explains how addiction affected her health, relationships and sense of self.

Bryony Gordon, Running and the London Marathon

Running became important to Gordon during a difficult stage of her life. She completed her first London Marathon in 2017. In 2018, she ran the race in her underwear with model Jada Sezer to challenge narrow ideas about what a runner’s body should look like and to support body confidence.

Bryony Gordon later helped develop Celebrate You, a running movement based on inclusion and body positivity. In 2026, she returned to the London Marathon and finished in 5 hours, 56 minutes and 36 seconds. She again ran in underwear and supported the Bowel Babe Fund with broadcaster Adele Roberts.

Bryony Gordon’s Younger Years and Body Image

Bryony Gordon has spoken frankly about weight, bulimia, binge eating and pressure to become thinner. Her own experiences are more meaningful than simple comparisons between younger and present-day photographs. Running helped her focus less on appearance and more on strength, movement and what her body could achieve. That idea became an important part of her body-positive message.

    Awards and Recognition

Her campaigning has earned major recognition. She received the Mind Making a Difference Award, and her work connected with Mad World also gained journalism honours. In 2020, she received the Journalists’ Charity Special Award for her contribution to mental-health awareness. In 2023, the Royal College of Psychiatrists awarded her the President’s Medal for work that improved the lives of people affected by mental illness.

    Where Bryony Gordon Is Today

Today, Bryony Gordon combines journalism, books, podcasting, campaigning and running. She remains a director of Mental Health Mates C.I.C., writes for the Daily Mail and hosts The Life of Bryony. Her 2026 novel People Pleaser has opened a new chapter in her career as an adult fiction writer.

Her influence comes from turning difficult personal experiences into wider conversations. Through writing about OCD, addiction, sobriety, eating disorders, motherhood and body confidence, she has built a career based on openness and empathy. That willingness to discuss subjects many people once kept private has made her one of Britain’s most recognisable voices in mental-health journalism and personal storytelling.
