Julian Dunkerton is one of Britain’s leading fashion entrepreneurs. He rose from a small clothing venture to create a brand known across the world. His career includes rapid growth, boardroom conflict, and a determined return to leadership. He is best known as the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Superdry, though his interests also include hospitality, cider, property, conservation, and leisure.

    Who Is Julian Dunkerton?

Julian Marc Dunkerton is a British businessman born in March 1965. He is 61 years old in 2026, and his full birth date is commonly given as 1 March 1965. He spent part of his childhood in London before moving to rural Herefordshire as a teenager. Companies House confirms his birth month, British nationality, and residence in England.

Julian Dunkerton attended Ibstock Place School, Orleans Park School, and The Minster School. His move from London helped develop the tough nature that shaped his career. He once considered medicine, yet formal education did not suit his strengths. Retail became his real classroom, teaching him buying, pricing, customer behaviour, and risk.

    Julian Dunkerton’s Early Business Journey

At 19, he used a government-backed enterprise scheme to enter fashion retail. He borrowed about £2,000, bought clothing in London, and sold it in Herefordshire. The venture made a profit and gave him the confidence to continue. He knew that young people outside London wanted the same styles found in Camden and Kensington markets. His early idea was simple: take exciting clothing to places where demand was strong but choice was limited.

    Founding Cult Clothing

In 1985, he started Cult Clothing in Cheltenham with a former business partner. The first shop became a national chain, with many branches in university towns. These locations reached young customers who wanted distinctive fashion at a fair price. Cult Clothing grew to nearly £20 million in turnover. Dunkerton stayed close to shop design, buying, product choice, and customer habits. He wanted to know which items sold, why people entered a store, and what made them return.

    How Julian Dunkerton Created Superdry

In 2003, Dunkerton co-founded Superdry with designer James Holder. The label began as an in-house brand with a small collection of five T-shirts. Its style mixed British streetwear, American vintage themes, strong graphics, and Japanese-inspired text. The unusual design helped the clothes stand out. Jackets, hoodies, T-shirts, and casualwear became easy to recognise. Superdry gained support in Britain before expanding overseas.

From Cult Stores to a Global Brand

A dedicated Superdry shop opened in Covent Garden in 2004. Growth followed through owned stores, franchises, concessions, wholesale partners, and online sales. By 2012, the remaining Cult Clothing shops had become Superdry stores.

    The London Stock Exchange Float

In March 2010, the business joined the London Stock Exchange with a value of about £400 million. The float marked a major stage in its global expansion. Public ownership brought pressure to meet investor targets while protecting the brand’s long-term strength.

    Leaving and Returning to Superdry

Dunkerton stepped down as Chief Executive Officer in 2015 to focus on products and brand design. He left the board in March 2018. During his absence, Superdry suffered falling sales, a weaker identity, and a steep decline in its share price.

He criticised the company’s direction and said it had moved away from its core customer. In April 2019, he won a narrow shareholder vote and returned to the board. He then resumed control of the company and its recovery plan. His comeback showed his deep emotional and financial bond with the business. He believed that stronger products, better design, and clearer leadership could rebuild the brand.

    Julian Dunkerton and Superdry’s Recovery

Superdry faced weak demand, rising costs, online rivals, the pandemic, and changing fashion tastes. In 2024, it began a three-year restructuring plan based on rent cuts, lower costs, new funding, and an exit from the London Stock Exchange.

Dunkerton backed the funding with his own money. Superdry ended stock market trading in July 2024 and became a private limited company in August 2025. Companies House records him as the person with significant control, holding at least 75 per cent of its shares and voting rights.

He remains Chief Executive Officer. His work centres on stronger products, digital customer contact, simpler operations, and a clearer business model. Sustainability also forms part of the company’s direction through better materials, fair factory standards, and lower environmental harm.

    Julian Dunkerton Net Worth

His exact personal fortune is not confirmed through open financial records. The Sunday Times Rich List 2026 placed him and his wife, Jade Holland Cooper, at number 259 with combined wealth of £518 million. Their main wealth sources were Superdry and Holland Cooper.

This amount is a joint estimate, not his personal bank balance. It may include company ownership, shares, property, land, and other assets. His wealth has changed with the value of Superdry. In 2016, he sold four million Superdry shares to raise more than £53 million during his divorce. He still kept a large stake. His later investment in Superdry’s recovery shows that much of his fortune remains connected to business assets.

    Julian Dunkerton’s Wife

Julian Dunkerton is married to Jade Holland Cooper, founder and Chief Executive Officer of the British fashion brand Holland Cooper. They met in Cheltenham in 2016 and married in August 2018 at their Gloucestershire home.

Craig David performed at their wedding, while Idris Elba took part as a DJ. The couple share interests in fashion, retail, country life, horses, hospitality, and business. Jade built Holland Cooper from a small country-fashion venture into a major luxury clothing company.

Who Was Julian Dunkerton’s First Wife?

His first wife was Charlotte Abbot. Their marriage ended in divorce, and they have two children together. The major share sale in 2016 formed part of the financial settlement. Details about his older children remain private.

    Julian Dunkerton’s Children

He has four children: two from his first marriage and two with Jade Holland Cooper. His daughter Saphaïa Isabella was born on 24 November 2020. His son Jamie was born in December 2022. Julian and Jade have spoken about raising their younger children with discipline, outdoor experiences, and respect for work. They want them to enjoy a proper childhood and understand simple values despite their privileged home life.

    Julian Dunkerton’s House

The family lives at Dowdeswell Court near Cheltenham in the Cotswolds. It is a restored Grade II building made from Bath stone and built in the Neoclassical style during the 1830s. The estate includes gardens, woodland, lakes, an orangery, an orchard, and a swimming pool. Media coverage has used a £50 million value, but no current formal sale confirms that figure.

    Other Companies and Business Interests

Companies House holds more than one officer record for Dunkerton. One contains five active Superdry-related roles. Another contains 40 total appointments, including current, resigned, and dissolved positions. His wider interests include Dunkertons Cider, The Lucky Onion hospitality group, property firms, conservation projects, equestrian activities, vintage clothing, food businesses, and padel. His father Ivor and stepmother Susie founded Dunkertons Cider in Herefordshire in 1980. Julian took control in 2014 and later moved production to Gloucestershire.

These ventures show his interest in businesses that combine quality, place, identity, and customer experience.

Political Activity and the People’s Vote Campaign

In 2018, Dunkerton donated £1 million to the People’s Vote campaign, which called for another vote on the final Brexit agreement. He argued that access to Europe had played an important role in Superdry’s global success. He described himself as non-party political and a committed supporter of remaining in the European Union. His donation became one of the campaign’s largest gifts.

    Awards and Recognition

He won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for UK retail in 2010, along with the London and South regional honour. He was named CEO of the Year at the UK Stock Market Awards in 2011 and PLC Entrepreneur of the Year in 2013. In 2021, Drapers gave him the Positive Change Award for sustainability leadership. The honour recognised his effort to place environmental goals and responsible production at the centre of Superdry’s future.

    Julian Dunkerton’s Leadership Style

His leadership is direct, product-led, and personal. He believes a fashion leader must understand the item, the shop floor, and the customer. He is known for strong views and a willingness to challenge executives, investors, and accepted business habits. This style can create conflict, but it has also powered his biggest achievements. He built Cult Clothing, helped create a global label, fought his way back into the boardroom, and invested his own money to protect the company.

The Lasting Legacy of Julian Dunkerton

Julian Dunkerton has spent more than four decades in retail. His career shows how a small idea can become an international brand when design, timing, and customer knowledge work together. His legacy is still developing. Superdry continues its recovery as a private company, while his family interests extend across fashion, hospitality, cider, and property. He turned a love of clothing into a global business and proved that founders can return, take risks, and fight for the brands they created.
